Fejd - Eld (90/100)
(from www.metal-archives.com)
Soundtrack from Sweden
The band considers themselves as a folk metal band. Two guys from their lineup (the Rimmerfors brothers) are from a folk band, and the other three play in a metal band (Pathos, great music by the way). But what can I say... Personally I would rather call them a folk rock band. Their music isn't heavy at all and surely isn't agressive. Hell, they don't even use electric guitars! They have more in common with bands like Jethro Tull (especially „Songs From The Wood” or „Minstrel In The Gallery” era) than Iron Maiden for example. But is that bad? Propably more orthodoxic metalheads will shout: "Hell yes!" but I know, that every metalhead sometimes needs to calm down after a hard day and then he want's to listen to something softer than bands that he normally listens to. If you know what I am talking about, you will surely love this album!
Fejd's music is rather soft, light, dreamy, romantic, very atmospheric and... incredibly beautiful! Turn this CD on, lay down on bed, close your eyes and without any problem you can imagine that you are in Sweden! That you are wandering about through this beautiful country, adoring it's landscapes, breathing it's clean air. Oh yeah... If you like to travel, you wish to escape one day from the big city you are living in, but you don’t have enough money/time/strong will just like me, you will be over the moon!
Production of this album is great, you can hear every one of plenty instruments that are used here. Big bravo goes especially to Patrik. He has a great, very emotional voice that fits perfectly to this music. I can't imagine Fejd without him. He is surely one of the best vocalists I have lately discovered. And what about the songs? They all are great but as for me, the best song of this EP is "Morgonstjärnan". Very epic stuff, and it's impossible to describe what Patrik does with his voice here! I'm just speachless...
Ok, but who will like this album? I think that this music is adressed mostly to people who like not only metal, but also rock music. Quite light, atmospheric rock with plenty of folk influences. Also people who are in love with Sweden and it’s culture will surely love not only „Eld” but also every other piece of music recorded by Fejd, especially because their demos are as great as this EP (and they sound better than many LP’s of other bands). I hope Fejd will record their first long lenght album soon…

Beautiful, atmospheric...slow
This is pretty much what folk metal is all about. There are no screaming guitars that take away from the folk atmosphere created by this EP. Each song is packed full of folk goodness. There are some melodies you will hear that make you wish the songs were twice as long. The way each instrument is implemented allows each song to have no gaps or empty holes that were never filled.
There is nothing "hectic" or "insane" about this EP. The songs don't blaze a huge trail for you to follow. There is no agression. They are all evenly paced and never leave you anxious or wondering why they sometimes even have the folk label. But again, with that said, this isn't an album you can go blasting at a party and have everyone dancing to. It's atmospheric folk metal that creates a refreshing feel to the genre. Great background music but nothing to scream to your friends over.
By the time 'Morgonstjärnan' ends, it seems like it was almost twice as long as it should have been. It's beautiful but it sounds like more of an interlude than a full song.
The clean tone guitar on the title track is really the only stand out hint of electric guitars on the EP. There is little to no distorted guitar but Fejd shows that it isn't always needed to create beautiful folk metal.
There is nothing hidden in any of the songs. Everything you could ask for from a folk metal band is right there for your enjoyment. The acoustic work is just brilliant and really adds life to the music. It has to be said that from the beginning of the EP you notice the lack of distorted electric guitar. But by the time the EP ends, you don't miss it at all. The powerful feel of the acoustics really shines and makes you forget about the crunch that most folk metal bands add.
This really is excellent ambient folk metal that you can put on and help create a beautiful atmosphere around your home while your reading/cleaning/etc. The only gripe is that if you have an urge for more upbeat folk metal, you'll have to wait for this EP to be over to fulfill that urge. There is no up tempo on this EP at all and in the long run, that is what might kill the replay value in some stereos.
Over all, an above average rating because it's absolutely great to listen too but for the lack of fast tunes it eventually dulls its self out.
